The veterinary technicians include Ohio State staff and students from Columbus State Community College.

Kim Penrod has worked with Dr. Dyce for 16 years and has been his personal technician for five years. She does the client phone calls, call backs and answers their questions. Her responsibilities include refilling prescriptions, patient care, “go-home” detail and after care assistance. On receiving days she works closely with Dr. Dyce. On surgery days she sets up his surgical suite and assists him when he is doing a total hip replacement procedure.

The technicians assist the students and residents with restraining the animals during the examination, administering medications, prepping the patient for surgery and preparing the operating room. The students observe during surgery and assist when possible.

Part of their job is very physical and includes lifting animals on and off gurneys; and sometimes requires them to sit on the floor while they’re being examined.
